• Mondi aligns their financing with their sustainability framework: Mondi signs new EUR 750mn five-year multicurrency RCF linked to its MAP2030 sustainable development goals. This replaces the existing EUR 750mn facility that was due to mature in July 2022.
  • Mondi and cheese packaging company Hazeleger Kaas join forces: Together they have developed a new lightweight fully recyclable polypropylene (PP) mono-material solution for packaging cheese slices (most are still packaged in mixed material, making it difficult to recycle). The product will have a PP thermoforming top and bottom web and a PP label instead of paper label to ensure the product can be recycled in its entirety. The solution will reduce Hazeleger’s plastic use by 23% (9.2mtpa).
  • Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG) expands their footprint in the Americas (now 13 countries): SKG has acquired Cartones del Pacifico, a leading corrugated business in Peru, this building out their leadership as the largest pan-regional supplier in Latin America. As part of the transaction, the Emusa Group has acquired SKG’s flexible packaging business in El Salvador. SKG remains selectively committed to flexible packaging as seen with their EUR 12mn investment in their new flexible material production facility in Spain (an extra 4,300m2 of production), offering full production cycle of their Bag-in-Box packaging solutions. This new plant has up to 21% less CO2 emissions than their current flexible materials portfolio. 
  • Papierfrabrik Palm to kick of production at its new 750ktpa testliner PM5 by the end of June: The new unit replaces three existing PMs, two of which were idled earlier this year. The old PM5 (150kpta) will remain up and running until the new PM starts up.
  • Huhtamäki acquires foodservice packaging company in China: Huhtamäki has acquired Jiansu Hihio-Art Packaging (EUR 20mn of sales in 2020) for EUR 27mn. The company produces paper bags, wraps and folding carton.
  • Sappi sets new milestone for the textile printing industry with Transjet Tacky Industrial and Basejet: Transjet Tacky Industrial: It has immediate tack effect, high ink transfer, fast ink drying and no ghosting on elastic textiles due to its reversible tack Basejet: It has consistent print quality for light designs, fast ink-drying and a very fast transfer process.
  • Kondopoga Pulp and Paper plans to enter the DWP market: The company intends to initiate a large-scale diversification and modernization program but requires significant investment and support from the state. This would mark the first DWP production in Russia, targeting 100-200ktpa of SW DWP with ramp-up expected from 2024 and reaching full capacity by 2025.
